Stripped Down
and Raw - Its
MILLI VANILLI EXTRACT.....

After looking over the vanilla extract post I sensed there were some missing details. The first detail is that this is not as extravagant as it seems, The vanilla beans were purchased online and I mentioned it a few days ago for a very good price making this batch costing about 5 bucks my cost. (the reason it is so expensive is because I purchased the miniature cognac)The second detail is the bottles size, it is a 4 ounce miniature Martel Cognac. The third and final detail is the rum, it is Pirate rum. I paid 9 bucks for a 750 ml bottle of a rum named Whalers Rum and it is as dark as you see it. It tastes great but it is not a high priced rum. My point is that homemade vanilla extract is by far CHEAPER than any thing you can buy, and it is PURE and it is BETTER and it is EASIER THAN EASY to prepare.

So does it mean I could use it, when I usually use my vanilla sugar?

anette: it is not sweet, and you could add a little sugar to it to make it sweet but it is more to be used like an essence, so the answer I think would be no, you cannot use it like vanilla sugar...

You have so sold me on the idea of homemade extract. What am I waiting for? :)

Doggy, you make this stuff sound so good that if I weren't working full-time, blogging full-time and trying to write a novel, I swear I'd try this out myself.

Thanks for the clarification! Most recipes I've seen use vodka. Does it make a difference, better or worse with dark rum?

dawn: that sounds great or how about a triple thick vanilla soy shake?

daily spud: YES another convert!

jeanne: I wish I had the time to do what you are doing I can only spare the 15 minutes it took to make this.

harmony: except my milli vanilli is not lip synching

starr: yes most do so that you can see it getting darker and because vodka has a ligher flavor, then rum is sometimes added at the end to darken it up, I wanted a super dark vanilla.

arr! grab me a pint of that pirate rum, matey!

That's neat--I hadn't heard of rum being used in extract--makes sense. And probably quite tasty.
