old fashioned

Very few things are more old fashioned than bread pudding. The reason I think bread pudding is old fashioned is because the first time I ever had it was with my grandmother and back then I always thought it was something that old people ate, since my mom never made it.

My grandmother made it on Sundays in the usual way with eggs and cream and all but she did something different, she grated cheddar cheese on top that got all melty and delicious mixed with the sweetness of the bread pudding. I didnt make it that way this time.

I make this often, well if two to three times a year is often and it always comes out great. It is after all french toast in a bowl and probably easier to make, even though this did get a little too brown. I put a scoop of some nice rich vanilla ice cream and drizzle a little maple syrup over the whole thing and give it to the kid, he loves it.

This is my absolute, most favorite dessert (when made well), although I prefer a bit of whipping cream drizzled over the top - YUM!

I invented shepards pie. Show off. The pie and the bread pudding. Yum. Comfort. Come visit and bring food. I sent RRay something of substance. I better hear from her this time. I blogged food...finally. Hope your life is wonderful. By the food I say it is fabulous! ;)

This pudding looks delicious! I've never made a bread pudding but I would like to someday. Btw, I'm totally in a mood for shepard's pie after your post so will be making it tomorrow for the family.

Ahhh such memories....when I was pregnant with my first baby...a Jamacian nurse I worked made me bread pudding every month...soft, sweet and heavy with the taste of rum......which I presume was the comfort part of the dish....LOL>>>

This is one of my favourites too! (I think I might have to make it soon) I use red sauce (made of berries) over it. and I have cinnamon, sugar and raisins betveen the slices, before they get soaked in milk and eggs.

Love it, love it. Just like Dana, my most favorite dessert. Hands down.
Mom used to have a bread draw where all the scrids would gather to the bottom until there was enough for pudding. I used to sneak breaking up fresh bread and put it under so we could have it sooner. Think she ever guessed? Ha.

dana: me too, with whipped cream , with chocolate sauce, with fruit coulis, you name it

deb: I did! and I would love to visit, but we might never leave.

pinknest: whats better than a big bread pudding, a bunch of mini bread puddings

5 star foodie: it could not be more easy, beaten egg, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, dried fruits if you want and bake in a ban marie oh yeah and old bread.

gina: why does everything you say hit me like a double entendre?

anette: I bet you make a delicious bread pudding...

spin: get on it!

pigpigscorner: the warm smell is the the real memory..

micky t: she probably thought you were one clever little rapscallion

buff: sailor duff sounds good, this is similar to a steamed pudding - google - capirotada - and you will see recipes similar to what my grandmother made..

I love bread pudding and rice pudding. I'm afraid to make it for my kids because they're such fussbudgets! I'll be trying it for my little guys soon, after my last big kid goes back to Carolina.

I never had this growing up because my dad said he found out his mom made it with old biscuits, so he refused to eat it again...my hubby thinks its the bomb, and always orders it when we go out...
