as good as it gets

When I was a kid I wanted my foods to look like what I saw on television and packaging and I would drive my mom crazy enforcing this. One of the most 'important' ones was my breakfast cereal - it had to look like what was on the box. It never happened.

What tastes better in your cereal than a not so sweet strawberry? How about a super concentrated dried strawberry?

Thats right dried strawberries are so rich compared to fresh.

Fresh is good, in fact fresh is great but these dried guys are chewy, fruity and sweet and they make your cereal better too.

That's an idea I might try!

I'd say thats very close to the way it looks on the package! I think i just imagined those not so sweet dried strawberries, cause my mouth went all watery! It's so handy that you can dry all these fresh things! Have you tried apples? What about fish?

Can you tell me why manufacturers add so much sugar to dried fruit and sell it for less than dried fruit absent the extra sugar? I like dried bananas, but wonder why they're fried & then sweetened.

Would you mind posting a photo of the dehydrator by the way? I'd like to see how it looks, I guess it's more than the tray you've put the strawberries on?

joy: drying things is more space saving than freezing

anette: no fish yet but apples, peaches, and the other day strawberries and pineapple

ap: sugar hides bad fruit I guess...some dried bananas (chips) are plantains - some (like in trail mix) are cavendish (regular bananas)

anette: follow this link - I think Buffalo and I have the same kind of dehydrator...it is a Harvest Maid.

That better not be as good as it gets cuz I am not a fan of cereal. The princess asked me last night when are you going to make that guys pizza again...so I guess I will be making pizza soon.

snugs: I was talking about the strawberries....mmmm pizza, I wonder if there is something you could do with fresh tuna.....

Smart! We've been on a crystallized-ginger-in-cereal kick recently. Dehydrated fruit would be a great idea! Could you do it in the oven, do you think?

My Mom couldn't make it look like the box, but she could make it taste like a box...

mmmm, I bet those are sooo good. I prefer dried fruit sometimes...the chewy goodness gets me every time!

True! ALthough there is a dried blackberry cereal here in France that is soooo sour!

My husband likes the big shredded wheat biscuits with fresh or frozen strawberries, cream and sugar. I froze probably 30 ro 40 pounds of strawberries this summer, and we're using them up!

i've made those before. amazing. the Trader Joe ones are really good too.

tavolini: I have been wanting to crystal ize things lately - you could dry them in the oven - set it between 150 and 200 and a few hours ought to do it...

buff: I would 'demand' my mom to make french fries 'just like mcdonalds'

beth: they taste stronger than the fresh berry

marie reed: I bet they would be good mixed into a muffin batter or a pancake...

marjie: I have a lot of frozen summer fruits I use for smoothies

tanya K: trader joes is so crowded here that I have only shopped there one time - I dont expect I will be going back - same thing with whole foods...

I do neither and don't have one of those dehydrator things but will check out your link to that one. I'm building up to branching out.
