oh so lucky
Yup, we are one lucky bunch around here lately. "Why are you so lucky, Dogg" you might ask? We are lucky because we get to be inconvenienced by television. "Television, how does T.V. mess you up" you continue? T.V. screws up everything because they are shooting Law & Order on my block from yesterday until Friday.
See, I am not happy.
This means that all the cars on the block have to be moved or they get relocated. It means that if we come home or have to go to the store or anything while the cameras are rolling we have to wait like cattle. It means that late at night our block could be lit up like noon in July to create the daylight that has long since passed. It means that there could be unusually loud effects depending on the situation ranging from fires, to gun shots to car wrecks. While all of this might sound cool to some of you it is no longer cool to me. My block and my neighborhood is 'film shoot central' and it gets tiring after a while. Its the same thing as people with curly hair wanting straight hair. If you have it you dont want it.
When life gives you film shoots then make lemonade or something like that. Amazing Tastes sent me some flavor packets some moons ago and I have been gradually using them to amazing results.
The flavors are very concentrated so a heavy hand is cautioned against, trust me I found out the hard way. I little sprinke or two is all it takes. I made a syrup by rendering down a little of the tamarind and I rubbed this in with a little of the pork seasoning from Amazing Tastes, wrapped it up in banana leaves and foil and in the oven it went.
I wrap up pork in banana leaves very, very often, it is a flavor that once you have had it once you will only want it in the future. The meat gets so tender and the taste....if you only knew.

Yes you look very unhappy. I have to say that I have never been anywhere when "shooting" a show/movie was taking place...and it doesn't sound appealing at all. Especially, if it messed with my home life. I can't believe they can have your cars removed..wtf? Sorry that you are having to go through this type of situation yet again.
The pork looks SO yummy...perfection!
Flavor packets look pretty...amazing ;)
So, are you often an extra in any of the film/tv shoots? Tavo and I wandered into 3-4 Brazilian soap operas while we were in Rio.
I would like to "know"
harmony: between this and all the parades we get...I am telling you!
tavolini: they keep the shots pretty tight...if I show up on TV they would have to pay me...
micky-t: one of these days its gonna happen.
The taste ... I'd like to know. Those ribs look insanely good.
Gah, I hear you on the horrors of filming in one's hood. It sucks. Large. Especially the night time stuff. Feh.
You do look a bit groutchy!
You're lucky to be eating that for dinner. Looks bomb!
Not happy but handsome!
We just had a movie production wrap up on our street! GET OUT!!
And all of the city parades start at our house! You are freakin' me out!
I can't remember the name but it's with Bill Murray. It'll be out soon-watch your local listings.
But I agree with your-it can be inconvenient-particularly after the thrill has worn off for the police and they angrily wave you five blocks out of your way and you can see your house only five houses away.
Pork chops are looking wickedly delicious... By the way as long as one is not in the situation everything seems to be nice and interesting, I meant the Law&Order CI shooting hangama thats happening at you place ;)
I would stand on the street and try to get in the cameras way, yelling, "Hi Mom!"
Sorry about the shoot inconveniencing you. Don't worry, if I ever do shoot in in New York, I'll be sure your street won't be touched. :-p Though, those ribs would sure any mood.
I got some of the Amazing Tastes packets, too. Just trying to figure out what to make with them.
The only thing ever filmed here was when the Google street view car passed a block or so away. Hey, it was front page news...such is tiny town life.
No shit, that does suck. Can you bake them all something really good and they might give you free range. LOL Hubby & I were stuck when they were shooting sex & the city 2 columbus day years ago, it was fun in the beginning, but then we had to wait for like 2 hours. Not being from nyc, my feet can't stand for 3 hours or more without a break.
arrrrrrrg! You poor thing!
I can imagine how tiring and inconvenient the shooting schedules can be.
That pork sounds and looks amazing. I too love the flavour of food wrapped and cooked in banana leaves.
Ribs look great! I'm going to try something old/new with BB-Q ribs soon- we've just never scored high in the State cook-off with our ribs...
the diva: get some banana leaves and try it - you will love it!
jill: the PA's are just pushy little twits that dont care that you live there
duo: I want some garlicky pasta to go with it!
just telling: thanks thats so sweet... so what about our deal?
patty: one of us is going to spontaneously combust
ramya: yup, with Jeff Goldblum he is really tall
TBD: and about 15 teamsters would dog pile you
jenn: give me a role and I wont complain...the packets, I still need to work on those a bit...
marjie: this is the second film this month....the last one was a smaller production.
dawn: so now you know...and the parades can be out of nowhere for reasons only known to the paradees...imagine running late for an appointment and then ...a parade!
oneshot: exactly!
cynthia: the flavor is hard to describe isnt it?
buff: if you ever need any ideas let me know....
haha... I can sympathize. There's filming some car chase scenes for an angelina joli movie here this week and all of the roads are closed!! (and we have like 0 public transportation)
at least dinner looked good!!
Dude! You look pissed!
Is there any way to raid the catering truck from your window? I'll help you!
The ribs look fantastic!
I saw some of the comments you left ChefE. I have thought about this for a little bit as what to say to you because she is my friend and made me aware of this. You don't need to be a one man crusade against her. This needs to be dropped. In the past you have been quite rude...like correcting her vocabulary and other things. Some may enjoy your rhetoric but she has made it quite clear she wants nothing to do with you. She has pleaded with you but you continue not to listen...what's more you have no empathy for her situation. She doesn't claim to be perfect...and from what I can tell of most blogs..we are humble..especially among friends. If you choose not to be her friend...leave her alone...leave her blog alone. From what I see of your blog it could be easily shot down..your followers are not so great that you are infalliable to mockery.
Think you next steps through...this is already ugly.
Christine
healthy: its like the never ending never endingness
christene et al: bold to say the least.
zen: all you have to do is wear a headset wire under your shirt and you can grab a bagel....
Are the ribs fall off the bone type when cooked with the banana leaves the way you described?
Ugh, that sucks. I can't believe how much inconvenience one TV show could cause. At least you've convinced me of the amazingness of banana leaves.
I can see how that can get your nerves after the novelty wears off. I am all for banana leaves - we use it quite a bit for sweet and savoury dishes in Malaysia.
There was a humongous light on a crane the other night, that lit up the whole neighborhood during some film shoot. Quite annoying. I'll take your flavor packets instead. Looks scrumptious.
Looks like the inconvenience produced a wonderful dish.
That is both funny and sad! I remember when my kids were at preschool in Milan and the street was closed when I showed up to pick them up. They were preparing for the big film/tv awards ceremony at the theater across the street. When they wouldn't let me thru I stomped under the tape and said "My kids are in school there and it takes priority over your tv thing!" They let me go by! Ha!
Love the look of those ribs! Yummy!
ahh the perks of NYC, maybe the law and order crew can help you with the photo investigation! And now I see that she has her little cronies taking up for her, reminds me of someone else we both know and love posting off blog emails to get support. If you are going to post a blog for the public you need to put your big girl panty's on and accept that not everyone is going to like you and your crappy food. Posting emails on the blog is so immature, but then again this is the person that calls herself a chef and gives out honorary degrees. You really have to wonder what color it is in her world don't ya?
donna: shake it enough - you will see
elyse: yup the movie set of my life...my block is barren this morning waiting for the crew to come back
maya: It is a great flavor isnt it...I believe it has some enzyme to help tenderize the meat...but thats only my theory...
Pinknest: I know you know what I mean...and those lights are like the mach 10 of lights
susan: thats a really nice way of looking at it and I need to try and see it that way more...
jamie: it feels uncomfortable to do that but sometimes its the only way...
snugs: abuse me, bore me, but dont ignore me...LOL and that cake chick called all my readers out - to boot!
we could never ignore you doggy..I tried to check out the cake chic's blog but with my ADD it was just too hard to try to read it- maybe you couild give her some pointers too :)
mmm I can just image the fragrance the banana leaves bring. Genius.
sorry about the show - they should be ashamed of themselves for inconveniencing you! the pork looks delicious!
I, personally, am one fantastic follower...so there!
