fish wish
Or should I say fishy washy? You dont have to hold me down and tickle me to get me to eat fish I do it willingly, in fact I think fish is so good I make others eat it too. Chinatown is a fountain of plenty when it comes to seafood selection, you can look back when I talk about Tan My My and see for yourself. I do know a lot of the different kinds of fish but I definitely dont know all of them yet that wont stop me from buying it, in fact some are so 'out there' that I cant even find them in my reference materials, these I just chalk up to 'some kind of mullet'.
A lot of people like eating breakfast for dinner - I will do that on rare occasions and I mean super rare. I cant imagine eating pancakes or french toast at eight o,clock at night and then not wanting to go run a mile. I havent been out late drinking in 10 years so the late night breakfast binge isnt in my schedule either. What is in my schedule is having dinner for breakfast and one of my favorites is catfish and grits. While catfish and grits is a breakfast offering it is not that common.
What it boils down to really is a carnivorious excuse to eat greens. I love greens of any kind and when I picked up these mystery greens in chinatown I thought the vendor was going to hug me. I grabbed a leaf, tasted it and said give me a pound, she glowed, I grabbed a different leaf from a different green and she started bubbling over telling me that I picked the two best ones. She was right, they were good.
One I can tell is in the Amaranth family and the other one looked Arugula like but it wasnt - mystery greens - chinatown -oh well.
The Permit fish and the 'mullet' in the first photo will be in future posts - its a fishy few days. The dozen oysters were gulped before I had a chance to figure out I had gulped them, (they were the chefs treat, what can I say a cooks gotta eat too ya know)

Catfish and grits. I gotta try that some time.
Milkfish and tilapia are also good fishes.
I often make spicy curries with tilapia.
in the south we eat every thing with grits. have you tried straw vegetables?! Good greens with garlic, sesame and stir fried!Excellent with salt and pepper fish!
catfish and grits sounds great, but I dont know if I could stomach it for breakfast. (actually I'm not a big morning eater so I'm pretty sure I can't. lol)
From where I'm sitting, the mystery greens look like "tong ho" greens. Sometimes they're translated as chrysanthemum greens. They sort of have a peppery-citrusy bite to them, which I just love. I love them in soup especially.
I adore shrimp and grits so why not catfish and grits - sounds pretty good to me!
I had to look up "grits" again,(I have before but wasn't sure). It's like polanta isn't it? Lucky you to have your Chinatown to go to on food adventures!
I could happily live on seafood. I love oysters, but opening them is always such hard work!

I have fish envy right now... I love it so much, and our choices here have been limited and/or expensive...
so, d'you ever grab the kid and a rod and go out for fishing ?? the amazing feeling when the fish bites, and then cook it over the fire right there on the shore...m m m :o)
Pups will stop the late night drinking thing, unless you want to head to divorce court.
My grandmother was allergic to eggs, so she ate odd things for breakfast. "Finnan Haddie" was a favored breakfast fish.
Haven't I told you before that I detest sea food, and it's smell?
Of course, maybe, just maybe, it's the way it's been cooked. I might like yours. I'll have to find out if I ever make it to NY.
I have recently tried and liked some fish...my taste buds, they are evolving!!!!
That catfish and grits look so good you might not have to tickle me ... much ... to get me to eat it. ;)

Catfish and grits is an all-time fave. We prefer shrimp most of the time, but honestly, neither will be turned away.
It's very easy to eat pancakes and waffles at night and not run a mile. You just remind yourself it'll be morning tommorow--and time for more pancakes and waffles!

Fish and grits is one of my favorite breakfasts--definitely more common in the south than in other areas of the country ;)
I do love grits for breakfast, but I haven't tried catfish. Looks delicious.
