little town city
We stopped three times and this was one of them. The best of them all. The first stop. We walked all over the place, we found berries and we could have gotten lost.
Haines, Alaska is my cup of tea. These people 'tolerate' the tourists, while others 'exploit' them...this town is a tight wire it wont be long before they start trying to 'cash in' with every boat load.
The state fair is coming up and it looks to be fun. We bought one of these posters for 5 bucks.
Salmonberries are not that sweet this year, so they say, because its been so warm and there aint much rain. Well we found them tartly sweet and perfect,in fact they could not have been better.
The strawberries were nice but the salmonberries were better.
You can buy Elk and Buffalo in the grocery store.
There were little buildings,
big leaves,
totem poles,
toys that look lifesize and
phone booths (wow) now this is an antique!
Look - its seals!

Pretty little town. How's a southwestern guy going to like the winter, though?
Gosh, Alaska is gorgeous. I've never been but would very much like to go.
Love the big leaf and the old phone booth. Still see those phone booths in the Bahamas, especially at the telephone company office. We've stood in those many a time waiting for the operator (inside the a/c building) to place a call for us to the US with outrageous prices per minute. Try standing inside one of those babies in one hundred degree weather out there - ouch. Of course you would know that the cord isn't long enough to stand outside the booth either.

marjie: did you forget that I live in NYC?
MCK: I didnt get in this one - in fact this is a close as I got...LOL
I been there! We drove from New Hampshire, across Canada, up the old Alcan Highway(dirt) and down into Haines. Sweet little northern town ehh?
Nice beautiful town.
Everything is so beautiful. Love the buildings and the totem pole! What type of leaf was that? And salmonberries? I've never heard of them. Is that their actual name? So fun...keep 'em comin' :)
What a lovely town. Loved the look of the berries. I would give anything to taste them! What a cute phone booth! Wonder how anyone can squeeze inside :)

What a fabulous trip you had. I love the photos you took. So how cool is Alaska this time of year? I'm sure cooler than El Paso. We hit 108 yesterday.
