Molcajete
A pico de gallo made in the molcajete feels so authentic and tastes even more so. I use this tool fairly often to grind up all kinds of things from spices to guacamole. And since I mentioned it last I finally have the proper stone for it the tejolote or pestle, I am no longer using a river rock.
This is a basic Pico de Gallo salsa with chiles, tomatillos, tomato, garlic salt and lime.
Served with taquitos, which are filled with spiced pulled chicken and then rolled into a corn tortilla, fastened with a toothpick and fried till crispy - a little crema (the link has a recipe for homemade mexican sour cream) and some queso rallado (grated mexican cheese similar to parmesean) topped with shredded lettuce and the salsa.
Many make a meal.

Damn dude. This should be illegal. I want those egg rolls!
Oops, I meant the taquito's...with some of that pico de gallo!
Rolled tacos ... mmmmmm ... when I lived in San Diego we could get these at the local taco stand for a song. Oh how I miss them ...
looks so delicious!
I'm starving and those look so good right now...yum!! I'm practically drooling on my keyboard...

*sigh..*
with delight of course
and that mortar... so genuine and rock-like!
I love mine but its white and so smooth, not like the one you've got! I could have two you know! one for the fine stuff, and one for the rough.
Meg: I think it is illegal in several states!
dana: you know how good they are then, the crunch, the hot center the cool salsa..
shreya: hey thanks for visiting - its fried can that ever be bad?
snow: careful you dont want to get sticky keys...
anette: hello - you snuck in while I was responding - I have a smooth marble one like you probably, and a wooden one...this thing weighs a ton...
Le Chien: I didn't mean to sneek up on you like that!
So it means I don't have to feel greedy if I have more then one!
anette: some call it a pack rat syndrome I just call it 'collecting'
*giggle*
or a hoarder..
I choose collecting off things we need!
whyyy do you make so many delicious things that have my name on it? whyyy?! these pictures just look so...gratuitous.
Oh wow that looks amazing!
Now that I am not speaking with my father...I may have lost my shot at inheriting the family molcajete.... :(
wow. that really looks good...i love tomatillos.
Thank you for stopping by my blog. Came to check out yours. It's nice and funny chez vous:)
That mortar and pestle look so authentic. I bet salsa tastes more authentic if made in it:)
That first picture is kinda phallic, you know...just saying...
Mexican is my fav! I love everything about it! Our local restaurant brings out a few of their entree's in these blazing hot things.. sizzling away.. When I was a kid the farm workers would bring fresh hot tortillas and sometimes tamales to us! Great food memories!
You get a HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, MMMMM YUM AWARD. I almost picked one of these maquito thingys up the other day at Sur La Table. I put it on the big guys x-mas list of Deb's have. ( which is always culinary related)
I checked out Ho Down. I'll do it in August. Did I see a Salmon encrusted in Hashbrown taters on your site???? If it was yours then may want to enter too. ;)~
Deb's Must haves rather.;)

Wow...it's breakfast and I'm wanting those taqitos! YUM!!!!
Oh man, i want that mortar and pestle AND the food that comes with it! This is EXACTLY what i want right now. It's Art mon'!
I am sooo jealous of the food in this post because it is soooo sexy. I wish I was this sexy.
What a delicious looking meal! I love Mexican food.
You live in Manhattan...with a kid, yet! How do you have room for a molcajete?
I'm duly impressed.
Who knew an Easterner would even own a molcajete? (Although there really is nothing wrong with a river rock.)
I was born in New Jersey, but my folks are from the West. Back then, Mom had to make her own tortillas 'cause they couldn't be purchased for blood nor money.
The pico de gallo looks pretty good.
