give a dog a bone

Bone marrow has been on my mind for days now and I was finally able to satisfy the craving. Each little nibble I got from soup bones or pork chops only made me want it more. On my recent trip to Chinatown I spotted some fairly decent marrow bones, I say fairly decent because they were mutton not the big and hefty beef that I was hoping for but they were going to have to do.

I roasted them in a 400F oven for about 15 minutes liberally coated in salt while I sliced a nice crunchy baguette lengthwise to make some toast.

While there was not nearly enough marrow to satisfy my craving it did do a fine job of making my toast a little more tasty.

oh, I love bone marrow on crustini. My dogs have to fight me for the marrow. I sneak around and dig out the marrow-then give them the roasted bones. And sometimes they have to wait until after the homemade stock.

...all right, my vegetarian side is taking over. I'm perturbed, but happy that all parts of the animal are being used.

(I do LOVE that pink background--I've honestly been considering repainting my kitchen fuscia and hanging plants and herbs on all the walls)

I would not have in a million years thought of roasting bones to get the marrow but, it makes perfect sense. I suddenly feel enlightened. Thanks!!!

Beautiful photos of bones! I remember chewing these when I was young....very delicious. I think I should go and get some and relive my childhood memories.

Did you see the marrow we had for new year's eve on my blog post? It was fabulous, but it left this caustic chemically goo in the bottom of my oven that took forever to clean! Unfortunately, my friend the chef, isn't much of a cleaner!

I once again will piss and moan about you having the best markets in the world..They would look at you cross eyed around here if you asked for that- even at a butcher shop!

Seems like a good lunch. But I'd prefer to use the bones for soup.

I have never had marrow like this - on toasted baguette! For those who are still a bit iffy about marrow, this may be the most genteel approach - another post showed the author sucking it out with a straw. I'm good either way.

I buy big ole beef bones at the local grocer for my dog to chew on. I've used them for soup bones (of course not after he's chewed on them). Never thought of baking them.... Maybe I should crank the AC/DC and give it a try :)

Bone marrow can be very delcious if cooked well in the oven or stewed. You can mix it with fresh cut red onion and rocket leaves to add interest to a salad or mix it with light cream cheese and roasted red pepper paste and spread it on toast with tomatoes and red onion dice.

This is the traditional way I've heard of having bone marrow. After eating it in Singapore, I'm definitely interested to try it like this. I had to get over initial "this feels odd" perception, but it was surprisingly good.

My mom would make us steak with the round bone when I was a kid. My sisters and I would fight over the bone and then using an ice tea spoon would eat the delicious marrow. You have brought back childhood memories with this post.

I don't think that I have actually tasted marrow in isolation enough to crave it. It's definitely an interesting idea to put it on toast...

I can honestly say I don't think I've ever had marrow on my mind! LOL But my husband would be all over this craving and this dish. You sure make it look inviting, doggy!

Oooh. Have to say when I made Osso Buco last week, husband scraped out every last little bit of marrow and ate it up while I left mine. Couldn't face it. I, needless to say, was scolded mightily. And I wasn't even allowed to give my dog the bone.

I must say though that you make even marrow look scrumptious!
