the dawn of a new year

A
s part of foodbuzz's Tastemaker program I recently received some of Paul Newman's products to check out. I was feeling lazy so a lasagna was made using the 'Sockarooni' sauce and we grazed on that for a couple of days, the sauce was used in the lasagna and a plain sauce was served with the portions.

The sauce is good, its hearty and full of flavor. I distributed (gave away) the salad dressings to people that would love them so when I get word back from them I will pass on the info and I still have the alfredo sauce that I am considering using in a very non alfredo way - stay tuned.

Two thousand and ten is right around the corner and in true Chez What/doggybloggy form there will be nothing going on for New Years Eve. I tend to use this night to reflect on the coming year and the year that has passed it is also the anniversary of me moving to New York City. I purposely came to New York on January first so that I would always know exactly how long I have lived here. I moved here in 1985 so do the math. While I may not hit the party scene there are still some traditions that we maintain like eating black eyed peas, and eating twelve grapes in a minute at midnight to symbolize each month of the coming year with the sweetest ones representing months that would be sweeter than others, and eating tamales- except this year I made pasteles and thats about it.

wtf, that's the third tastemaker thing that I haven't gotten now. I feel jipped! But only cause I love Newman's products. That lasagna looks great- love how you plated it with the sauce underneath! Have a great New Year!

Yum! I think I'll try that 12 grapes thing at midnight. :-D I was about to get a papaya yesterday at the market, but I totally spaced out and never did. I'll have to back and get one.

that tamale looks really good!!

I was just thinking that 10 years ago, in the dawn of this decade, I was in Manhattan in my buddy's tiny apt with about 5 of us on a twin bed. Luckily we didn't sleep much!

Happy New Year to you and your family--eat some hoppin' john and collards for good luck :)

Your eats look so yummy! Your banana leaf dish reminds me of the Chocolate Adventure contest - are you entering it in the savory category? You should! Google Chocolate Adventure contest or e-mail me if you haven't heard of it - the deadline is approaching. Happy New Year!!

I'm starting to be kind of intrigued by the whole banana leaf thing. Wonder where one procures a banana leaf here in the wilds of Ohio?

Ohh I've never heard that grape thing before, I love it!

We are loyal fans of Newman's Own. I have a jar of the alfredo in my pantry for backup nights. I can't wait to see your unusual use- maybe I'll be inspired to whip it up too!

I'm the same way with New Years Eve, I get kind of introvert this night and I'm summing up one year, and wonder about the next years secrets. But I spend the night with my family, and when all the fireworks goes off at twelve o'clock, I stay inside with the cat and the dog. When you do the grape thing, do you later remember which month that was sweet when the year goes along? Like Ahhh! what a wonderful month of May it has been, just like the fifth grape!

Don't know Newman.....I don't think I can find them here.
Eating twelve grapes sounds a fun tradition!

Happy New Year...mine are never laid back however.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you devise for the alfredo sauce. I've never found one in a jar that I'm crazy about.

Great idea for the lasagna.I'm so glad to hear you eat black-eyed peas for luck. We do too. Works most years. You must have read my mind because we're doing the grapes at midnight thing too this year.

Happy new year. I hope 2010 will be your best year ever.

looks good Dog...as usual. and I like the idea of the 12 grapes thing...I think I'll do that too. I'm not doing anything either. Being married to a cop makes that kind of hard..."There's nothing but drunk people out there!" Oh wait!!! We have a wedding to go to that night. that's dumb...a wedding on New Years Eve....stupid. and it's about an hour away.

wow...I'll quit rambling now......
