Vegemite

Having somehow created a challenge for myself I will attempt a Vegemite recipe. The Kraft site was easy to look at and they kept playing the Vegemite song making my visit entertaining. I really liked the little quiche idea so I am going to try something on those lines.

I changed my mind I went for a chicken wing thing.

I looked at the Kraft recipe for Indian style chicken wings and came up with a variation. I mixed the Vegemite, with some red chile powder, celery salt, black pepper and buttermilk and I let the wings soak for a good long while. Drain the wings and deep fry in hot canola oil until golden and crunchy. They came out tangy and tasty and I think I will experiment with Vegemite more.

Vegemite? Isn't that the Australian culture verson of American peanut butter made from soybeans or something?

Mmmm, those look good, but Vegemite? Just doesn't sound tasty.

It's made from the sludge at the bottom of the beer barrel. Beer-by-products! Yum!

I read up on this stuff, and I'm going to stick with my multi vitamin in the morning instead. I thought Lite Beer was the marketing coup of the 20th century, but this goo beat all odds becomiing popular....

"Vegemite is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract, a by-product of beer manufacture, and various vegetable and spice additives. The taste may be described as salty, slightly bitter, and malty -"
The salty and slightly bitter would stop me from trying it. Sounds like Jason wasn't too far off!!!

aLL: I was at Lara Crofts blog the other day when she was mentioning local favorites and I took it upon myself to do something more with Vegemite. I have to tell you that the results were good despite the bad reputation this product has to our USA flavor standards. I do like nutritional and brewers yeasts so the flavor is not too alien to me so vegemite used as a marinade works great.

Ok, am I mixing up Vegemite with Marmite? I've tried marmite a few times, utterly unbearable - kids used to put it on toast for breakfast. Is vegemite just the veggie version?

A pal sent me some vegemite, it just wasn't for me.

The wings look good though. :)

When my wife moved to NC to marry me (she's Malaysian Chinese), I of course introduced her to grits. She likes them best when she mixes in a spoonful of vegemite.
